Eastern Nazarene elevates Assoc. AD/Men’s & Women’s Volleyball HC/Men’s & Women’s Tennis Interim HC Derek Schmitt to AD. He replaces Brad Zarges following the former AD’s recent transition to serve as Chief Experience Officer for the College. + Methodist secures the program’s 14th all-time NCAA DIII Men’s Golf national championship after the Monarchs fire a four-round team total of 21-under-par to hold off Carnegie Mellon (-20) by a single shot. On the individual side, Oglethorpe’s Michael O’Sullivan snags the individual crown with a 12-under-par total of 276. (link, link)

+ The 2024 NCAA DIII Men’s Lacrosse Championship title tilt is set with RIT to face Tufts on May 26 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. (link).

The Daily Herald's Orrin Schwarz profiles Wheaton (IL) Men's Basketball HC/AD Mike Schauer, who says of his alma mater: "This is home. It’s hard for me to describe. I sometimes catch myself walking around this place — I got a little emotional there — walking around this place, just thankful for it. ... It’s a real privilege to be able to coach and work at the place you played. That’s a pretty unique experience.” Schauer, who has served as MBB HC since 2009 and took over as AD in October 2023, says of his newest title: "I’ve loved it. People sort of have the perception that this is something Wheaton is allowing me to do. I asked to do both. I’ve enjoyed it. Birmingham-Southern Baseball advanced to Super Regional play and is starting to garner media attention for the fact that, should the Panthers advance to the DIII World Series, the team would be active after the school shuts its doors. (link)

Alfred breaks ground on its new Saxon Hill Sports Complex, a $30M multi-field facility project that is being funded through a combination of bond issues and $10M in philanthropic gifts. With construction set to begin this summer, and completion expected by early 2026, the complex will include the Saxon Sports Center, boasting locker rooms, an athletic training room, offices and alumni assembly space. Also included will be a new lighted, synthetic turf baseball field with scoreboard, bullpens and dugouts, a two-tier press box, concession stand, team room and game operations space; a lighted 400-meter, eight-lane track with jump and throw areas, a video scoreboard and a synthetic turf infield that will also serve as future home to the department’s intercollegiate field hockey program; and a lighted natural grass rugby field with scoreboard as well as two sets of grandstands. President Mark Zupan: "This is the largest investment in athletics at Alfred University. With the challenges facing higher education, this provides us with a strong headwind." (link)

Officials with the Higher Learning Commission are working to more quickly identify distress signals among colleges & universities according to Inside Higher Ed’s Ben Unglesbee. With recent Government Accountability Office data highlighting that the closure of 1,100 institutions between 2000 and 2020 affected approximately 250K student loan borrowers, the Commission has reacted to calls for more accreditor accountability by increasing the pace of its dive into colleges’ financial risk. In examining 13 institutions under the accreditor’s purview that were shuttered between 2019 and 2024, shared characteristics were identified. Most were of small size (less than 1,000 students) and private non-profit colleges, had “low financial health scores and cash-to-expense ratios, decreases in staffing as a sign of cost-cutting, falling cash reserves, and audits falling behind schedule.” Other noted themes included “leadership turnover ahead of a closure, falling enrollment, tax challenges, unpaid bills and borrowing from an endowment without a clear plan to pay back the loan.” In highlighting the importance of accreditors staying in the loop to locate SOS signals from troubled institutions as early as possible, HLC Executive VP Eric Martin notes: “We’re not hospice. We really need to be proactive.” (link)

Harassment related to sports betting can cause serious harm to student-athlete mental health and well-being. …  That's why the NCAA is advocating for elimination of player-specific prop bets in collegiate competitions.” Heath also shares some statistics: One in three high-profile athletes received abusive messages from someone with a betting interest; 90% of harassment is generated online or through social media; Across the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, 54K+ posts/comments were flagged by Signify's AI for potential abuse or threats and reviewed by human in-house analysts; Of those 54K, 4K were confirmed as abusive or threatening and reported to the relevant social media platforms, with some elevated to law enforcement; WBB players received 3x as many threats as MBB ones.
