Concord AD/Baseball HC Kevin Garrett announces his retirement from both roles but will continue to serve the department as a consultant moving forward. Asst. AD/Women’s Soccer HC Luke Duffy and SWA/Women’s Basketball HC Tesla Southcott will take over as Co-AD’s. As an athletic administrator, Garrett oversaw the growth of Concord Athletics from 2009-2024. In the dugout, he racked up 570 wins from 1996-2010 and 2016-2024. Garrett: "I've been very grateful to lead Concord Athletics over the last 15 years. I have a lot of great memories in seeing Concord's success and growth. I look forward to assisting Luke and Tesla in however they may need me in the future." (link)

Recently hired Lewis Asst. VP of Athletics John Ashaolu sits down with University President David Livingston and Provost Christopher Sindt as part of the “Conversations From Stritch Hall” series to discuss his own time as a student-athlete, his career path & role in athletics and what he looks forward to most as he settles into the chair. On his first few weeks as Flyers’ AD: “What I’ve really been doing in my first couple of weeks is sitting down with my coaches and trying to understand, almost doing like a SWOT analysis, and figuring out what are the common themes for my coaches. Where are they saying we need to improve? … They know the competition in terms of the conference and regionally. What we’re missing, what we need to do to take ourselves from top 15 in the Learfield {Director’s Cup standings} to top five or top three. Just talking to my coaches and figuring out what those common themes are and setting a plan to address those common themes … There are themes where each coach is going to say the same things in terms of what we need to improve, in terms of our operations, facilities, whether it’s about how we do our marketing. So, you look at that and try to figure out a way, and this is how you kind of build that vision of where you want to be. Taking us from A-minus to A-plus. The Wall Street Journal’s Douglas Belkin profiles the class of graduating college students who began their college careers in isolation due to COVID and are now exiting amid a flurry of mass protests across the country. “College students today are lonelier, less resilient and more disengaged than their predecessors, research shows. The university communities they populate are socially fragmented, diminished and less vibrant. The pandemic bruised the psyche of a generation. The politics seared it.” Columbia junior Eden Yadegar says isolation amplified protests on campus and provided lonely students with a welcoming community inside demonstrations and the encampment on the quad. The divisions, however, remain bitter. Yadegar, who leads an organization supporting Israel, says she walked into a social club in which she had been a member for years, and members “would physically turn away from me. I have lost the majority of my non-Jewish friends over this.” According to Belkin, researchers have found the “isolation and disruption caused by the pandemic, along with the increased reliance on technology that it fostered, has fundamentally changed college life, leaving students less likely to build ties and find communities. SUNY Purchase professor Gari Laguardia, who has taught at the university for 40 years: “How can I put this, it’s duller than before Covid. The kids are less independent than they used to be. They seem to not be able to exercise much agency.” Lots more. (link)
