Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach sits down with Inside Indiana Business host Gerry Dick to discuss the current college sports landscape and says the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the transfer portal. “The money might be greener, but that's it. We had a fantastic student-athlete, he was first team all-league a couple years ago at Wright State. Because of his success he was recruited by Ohio State, transferred there, maybe got 10 minutes a game. And obviously I'm sure there was some significant NIL activity happening but he wasn't happy – and it wasn't a comment on Ohio State – he was just not happy because he's a competitor, and he's a really good competitor, and he wanted to play more. And also he missed his coach and that support system that wrapped their arms around him at Wright State. So he transferred back. … So that's why I say it's not just a two-way street of the boomerang effect. It’s more of there are student-athletes who recognize they might enjoy the profile of being at a Power 4 school or the Big East, but that doesn't always equate to playing time.” Roe Lach also offers her prediction for where the industry is headed: “I think it’s going to a settlement of the House case that will open the door for a revenue share, and then hopefully accelerate conversations with Congress…to allow that revenue share to happen without tripping employee status – and that’s just the revenue share from the media contracts.” She also would like to see more NIL guardrails “because I think what we've seen is that it's gotten exploited.” Full podcast. In the first of a two-part interview with 247Sports’ David H. Murray, Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon says the first year of his tenure was about setting the standard, “but now in the second year it's about elevating the standard. What we've done historically doesn't matter necessarily to us. It's like what are we doing next and how can we continue to improve? It's no different than what we ask our student-athletes to do every day. We ask them to work, improve, strengthen their game." Regarding the facilities master plan, Selmon says: “I've always been a big believer in fundraising [that] if we're asking people for money for a particular project, we want to be able to put our heads on the pillow knowing that we're being as financially responsible as possible. Knowing that we're paying for quality, we're paying with a strategy, we're paying for a vision. We didn't have that from a facilities master plan standpoint. So we wanted to pause that, not because you don't want to do anything at Davis Wade. But you don't want to spend millions of dollars and in a handful of years have to come back and say why did we do that? Or if only we had thought of it this way?" Selmon says the Davis Wade design is “probably on the goal line,” which is why a survey was sent to fans last week to see what amenities they would like. “I call it like playing Tetris, there's a lot of offerings we can put in the stadium. But we want to make sure we're putting the right offerings in. So once the survey is complete, and I'm told the response rate is incredible with good, authentic information we can go off of, we'll have an entire plan finalized that we can roll out.” More from Selmon. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake expects Oregon State and Washington State to bring in between $5M and $9M each as part of the new football TV deal with Fox and the CW. “But let’s assume the deal is worth approximately $7M a year to Oregon State and Washington State. That works for a short time from a financial standpoint because the two remaining Pac-12 schools are heavily subsidized by the $255M in settlement funds they’ll receive from the 10 departing members. There’s a two-year ticking clock that begins to count down at the end of June. It’s why the next six months are so critical.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points out a change in the NCAA’s NIL guidelines allows for student-athletes to engage in NIL activities while “‘on-call.’ Meaning during practice, pre/post-game, press conferences, and on court celebrations. This opens up a lot of cool NIL activities to brands, event operators, and athletes. As an example, athletes can now engage in things like the ‘I’m going to Disney World’ campaign that Disney always does with the Super Bowl.” (link)

The Big Ten has a monumental task in establishing tiebreakers for an 18-team league with no divisions. The obstacle is particularly daunting in football, where teams will play nine teams and miss eight. Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “As we transition to No. 1 vs. No. 2, we have to think through the entirety of the tiebreaker because there will be CFP considerations for the teams that finish fourth, fifth, sixth.” Kenny goes on to observe that “if you have a group with one common opponent, it makes you go deeper in the process, and you want to have it figured out before you get to the coin flip. We’re looking at whether there are other analytics we can pull in. … With the CFP, you have to work up how you go deeper in the process. You have to make strong, educated assumptions. The goal is not to get into a situation you can’t resolve. We want something that everyone can agree with and allows us to put the best teams forward, to Indianapolis and into the playoff.” (link)

Coeur d’Alene city attorneys have declined to file charges against an 18-year-old suspected of yelling racial slurs at the Utah women’s basketball team during their trip to the area for the NCAA Tournament. According to Chief Deputy City Attorney Ryan Hunter, Anthony Myers, a local high school student, admitted he yelled the N-word and a sex act at the players in an attempt to be “funny.” Prosecutors ultimately decided Myers’ words were protected speech. Coeur d’Alene Mayor Jim Hammond says he was disappointed charges would not be filed or that measures would be taken to hold those responsible accountable. “I’m not going to second-guess the prosecutor who made that decision, but I’m disappointed there’s not some form of community service that child can perform to be held accountable.” Utah officials declined to comment on Monday. After engaging in some digital sparring on X last week, Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders explains: “I gotta do better on that and not ride with it, but I was bored. I was bored, and I didn’t say nothing hurtful. I don’t attack people.” In one instance, Sanders responded with the phrase “Lawd Jesus” when an X user pulled up players’ stats to put the player down. Coach Prime insists his intent was not to put down the player: “I try my best to refrain, but like when you posted like stats, I said, `Lawd Jesus,’ like dang, he really went at him, like he really shot him. That’s really what I meant, and I think that was taken wrong. I think that was taken sideways or something else.” Ultimately, Sanders says: “I don’t lose no sleep over it. I could have a tumultuous day in the eyes of others but to me it was a good day. Because you know why? They talking. They talking. They talking.” (link)

Playfly Sports gets the assist on the new Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop. Playfly CEO Michael Schreiber: “The other part is the activation with an alcohol brand. American Gaming Commission President/CEO Bill Miller argues that legalized sports gambling “remains a solution, not a problem, when it comes to preserving the integrity of the games. … In fact, legal sports betting’s success requires absolute confidence in the integrity of competition. Fans will only bet on sports if they trust the games are fair.” To that end, Miller notes the AGA and its members have “robust compliance programs” and “leverage artificial intelligence, expert analysis and third-party integrity monitors to continually sift through data for concerning trends. … Legal sportsbooks also are required to meet federal anti-money laundering regulations and deploy Know Your Customer tools for all customer sign-ups. This includes verifying customer age and identity through official identification or Social Security numbers, allowing us to identify customers involved when we flag suspicious activity. The outcome of this robust process? Bad actors – like the University of Alabama’s baseball coach – are identified, investigated and held accountable to protect the integrity of the game and wagers. The same can’t be said of the illegal offshore websites and local bookies.” Miller goes on to observe that “you would think the reaction to these recent incidents [involving Shohei Ohtani, Jontay Porter and others] would be to double down on efforts to stop illegal gambling. Instead, we’re seeing headlines and counterproductive proposals to limit advertising in the legal market. These restrictions may feel good, but will have unintended, yet predictable, consequences. The reality is people won’t stop betting; they’ll go back to the illegal market.” (link)

Northern Iowa has named Drake Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Initiatives & External Operations/SWA Megan Franklin as its new AD. UNI President Mark Nook: "Megan has been a key contributor to the renaissance of Drake Athletics in recent years. Her understanding of the NCAA Division I landscape and the Missouri Valley Conference will be immediately beneficial to Panther Athletics. Her longstanding commitment to student-athlete success stood out among a field of very strong candidates. Megan’s vision of how UNI Athletics can compete for championships, while bolstering the profile of our entire university impressed me and the rest of our search committee." Franklin's tenure in Cedar Falls will officially begin next Monday. (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel sits down with the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia to discuss a wide range of topics, including the ways in which the transfer portal contradicts the way the Wolverines approach athletics. Manuel acknowledges it’s more difficult, but “I’m not going to ask the university to remove the standards and expectations they have academically. I’m going to say to our coaches, as I have said, ‘We need to make sure that we’re seeing transcripts ahead of time,’ so that we can make sure we get the quick read to know whether or not that young man or woman can be here at the university. Now, there can be other things in background and application that you find out about, but in a general sense, we have an idea looking at the transcript, in particular a transfer, and how many credits will transfer in right away.” Manuel also discusses the potential of adding women’s hockey and tells Garcia: “We’re doing a feasibility study that should be starting here in the next couple of weeks. We’ve had some conversations with consultants, talked with the NHL already, talked with another consulting firm to see and get a firm who can look at it as holistically as we can. … Ultimately, it’s going to be about what it takes to do it. It’s not so much should we do it or shouldn’t we, the question is what is it going to take? What would the needs be? How can that be measured against how the future lies?” (link)

Outgoing VMI AD Jim Miller Q&As with the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor, who asks whether the Keydets can succeed in football and basketball in the current environment. Miller: “Football, I think they’ve proven that they can ... Basketball, I’ll be honest with you, it’s unknown right now. … In the marketplace we’re in right now, everybody’s trying to get older, and that’s our problem. Kids leaving is not the problem. Everybody’s kids are leaving. … The problem at VMI is it’s very difficult to get transfers in, and so we’re continually competing with freshmen, and that’s not going to work.” As the landscape continues to evolve, Miller is bearish on how things will shake out for VMI’s peer institutions. “For the (schools in the middle of Division I) and below, I can't even imagine a scenario that's going to be beneficial to us rather than beneficial to the big guys. However, I am a person who believes we’ll end up with a more separate (Division I) and that the top guys, the top 100 schools, will separate even more and they'll compete at that level and (other schools) down to the FCS will create another group and will compete. I think the average fan would be shocked at the budgetary differences between those schools that are $150M, $200M budgets and the schools like VMI that are in the $15M, $20M, $25M budget range. It's just a different world completely.” (link)

More on College Football Players Association Executive Director Jason Stahl’s idea for a new college sports model in which student-athletes would not be employees but would be able to collectively bargain. He writes: “To get this type of ‘special status’ for college athletes, one which stops short of employee status but gives extensive protections and collective bargaining rights, you would need Congress to enact new legislation. We at the CFBPA now believe that such legislation is worth exploring – particularly after current ongoing antitrust cases against the NCAA, the conferences and the schools are settled in a way that is fair for athletes. … Increasingly, as we talk with current athletes on multiple football programs around the country, there does not seem to be an appetite for these types of legal battles over formal employment, unionization and collective bargaining.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice reports a “coalition is forming among Group of 5 personnel to have a dedicated poll for programs in those five leagues.” The new top 25 poll would include all G5 programs along with independents Connecticut and Massachusetts, and Brice notes that “organizers of the prospective poll believe that a proprietary ranking for the G5 leagues, with every head coach receiving a vote, could spark greater interest in potential broadcasting deals and programming.” Also, per Brice, organizers are “outlining preliminary voting dates – with preseason voting set to begin late July and the Group of 5 Top 25's inaugural rankings tentatively set for release Aug. 1. … Sources tell FootballScoop that the burgeoning movement already has a title sponsor for the rankings.” (link)

Saint Joseph’s AD Jill Bodensteiner joins the Trustees and Presidents podcast to offer a glimpse behind the scenes of how the Women’s Basketball Selection Committee works. When watching a given regular season game, Bodensteiner explains she’s looking to see if they’re at-large material, and that includes accounting for any anomalies. “So, if there is a lopsided loss I can say so-and-so was out, so-and-so was in foul trouble or it was a close game until the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter and the final score is deceiving. Or their star player just had a bad night…and just note their styles. How will they match up against other tournament teams? How will they compete against other tournament teams?” Once the field is set, Bodensteiner explains committee members have the option of following their teams in the NCAA Tournament if they make it. If not, they’re assigned to first- and second-round sites, where they sit in on practices and press conferences, meet with teams and officials and ensure the tournament is being run fairly. “The coolest thing for me is getting to watch how coaches coach, not only in practice but during games. It's just fascinating, and it helps me as an athletic director as well.” More from Bodensteiner. (link)

The Arizona Bowl has a new sponsor and will henceforth be known as the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop. The gin-based canned cocktail Gin & Juice is the first product from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s new premium spirits company, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes it “celebrates the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s classic debut album, ‘Doggystyle.’” Arizona Bowl Executive Director Kym Adair: “We are a little different from all the other bowls. We’re not afraid to take risks and do things outside of the box. An alcohol brand has always been off the table for us until recently. Everybody in the stadium is drinking a beer or cocktail. It’s time for the industry to evolve.” Snoop adds: “I’ve sent many players through my SYFL to colleges and the NFL so it’s only fitting that I bring the 'juice' back to college football.” (link)

NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances, Playing Rules and Officiating Rachel Seewald sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to outline perspective on changes to playing rules between divisions, whether NIL and social media have or will have an impact on playing rules and officiating and the the growing need for officials throughout the industry. Seewald says technology is a “major point of discussion in every rules committee meeting,” including whether to introduce new technology or expand technology that’s currently being used. Seewald believes ethical conduct could be a major focus moving forward and tells Banker: “We have seen increasing numbers in ejections, unsportsmanlike conduct by players, coaches, so trying to really address that. You want to have a game that people want to watch, and when behavior becomes such that it’s a real distraction, that’s when the rules committees want to step in and really see what can we do from a rule standpoint to address this unsporting behavior that we're starting to see more and more in our sport.” Full conversation on Connect. SBJ’s Bret McCormick profiles 4Topps’ growth from a seating solutions provider to its newly launched consultancy called Seat Revenue Advisors. Through the latter, the company advises clients on how to generate revenue by identifying underutilized or underperforming portions of seating bowls and helping clients flip them into contractually obligated, income-generating premium areas. The company also plans to launch a direct-to-consumer furniture business, selling the chairs it puts in stadiums to its clients’ fans, and has cast a long eye toward the indoor venue seating market, which it has yet to enter. Seat Revenue Advisors can provide financial modeling and potential ROI to customers, as well as renderings that can be used to sell to fans or sponsors, and 4Topps President Deron Nardo says: “We’ve had unparalleled access to conversations and data across college and pro markets. Listening to a customer telling you why something’s working or not working really is why I think we’re the best suited in the marketplace, full stop, to tell people what to do with their seating bowls.” (link)
